I trust you are well and hope that you will find the
reason for me contacting you to be an uplifting one.
In yesterday's game between London Welsh 1sts and Old
Salvatorians 3rds, London Welsh were awarded a penalty
which when taken appeared to the majority of the players
and onlookers to rebound off the post into the keeper's
hands who then dispensed the ball upfield.
However the penalty taker was convinced that rather than
coming back off the post the ball had actually rebounded
from one of the wheels of the mobile goalposts which had
been inadvisedly positioned on the inside rather than
the outside of the goal posts.
Personally I thought the cry of protest was borne more
from frustration at the missed opportunity than anything
else. That was until the Old Salvatorians full back (I'm
sorry I don't have his name) volunteered the information
that the ball had actually crossed the line before
coming back off the offending wheel.
The
referee John Frost was happy to accept this
extremely sporting intervention and duly awarded a goal
to London Welsh. This actually levelled the scores at
2-2 and in that context it made the Old Salvatorian
player's actions even more admirable.
Old Salvatorians clinched the winner in the dying
minutes and despite being disappointed with the defeat
I was glad that the player's sporting deed had not
proved detrimental to his team's eventual result.
